Expanding the Schema on your site

Yoast SEO outputs a Schema graph, which makes your site easier to understand by search engines like Google. That Schema is the basic output you need, for most pages. You will have things on those pages that would ideally also be in your page’s Schema graph. For instance, you might have a website with recipes. Then every recipe post, with just Yoast SEO, would be an Article, with an author, and that’s it. Yoast SEO would output a lovely Schema graph, despite its high quality, it is still missing that recipe. That should be in the Schema graph too.

So how does it work?

The inclusive language analysis works like our readability and SEO analyses, using red, orange, and green lights to guide you. Simply write any post or page as you normally would, and let the inclusive language feature in Yoast SEO assess your content. You’ll get valuable feedback, divided into categories such as age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status, to help you improve your content and make it appealing to a wider audience.

For instance, if you use the word obese, the inclusive language analysis will pick up on this and prompt you to consider alternative terms like has/have a higher weight; higher-weight person/people; person/people in higher weight body/bodies; heavier person/people.

Writing in an inclusive way can really help your SEO. But don’t just take our word for it! John Mueller, Search Advocate at Google, recommends watching out for inclusive language when writing copy:

Opt-in to use the inclusive language analysis

It’s good to know that the inclusive language analysis is opt-in, so it won’t be activated by default. It’s up to you whether you want to get feedback on the inclusiveness of your content. You can activate it by going to Yoast SEO > General > Features and toggling the inclusive language analysis switch. If you choose not to use this feature, the SEO and readability analyses won’t change. We’d love to hear your feedback about this feature, let us know what you think.

Why do you need a front-end SEO inspector?

The front-end SEO inspector in Yoast SEO gives you an overview of the SEO data on your site and lets you know what search engines see! You can check the titles, descriptions, meta robots tags, and structured data on your pages on the front-end of your site! In addition, you can quickly check the readability and SEO scores and take action to improve them, if necessary! The best part is that you won’t have to go through complicated inspectors or source code viewers. It’s all available with one click!

Ensure your posts and pages are optimized

At the top of the front-end SEO inspector, you’ll see the SEO and readability scores of the page. See any red or orange bullets? Then, it’s a good idea to click the Edit post button, check the Yoast SEO feedback and see if you can turn those bullets green! That will ensure your pages are well optimized for your readers and search engines.

Easily read what’s behind your pages

Traditionally, if you want to see what’s in the background of your site, you’d need to use the page source view, an inspector, or some browser extension. And still, you’ll land on a page filled with code that can sometimes be hard to read. For example, you get this when you use the View Page Source setting in Google Chrome.

The front-end SEO inspector is much easier to use. It gives you a very readable overview of the SEO data on your site, so you know exactly what you are looking at.

How to highlight and replace complex words?

It’s easy! You can find this feature in the SEO assessments section in the Yoast SEO sidebar or metabox. It shows you whether you have too many complex words in your text, or not! If you do, there will be an eye-icon to click on that will immediately highlight all the complex words in your text.

What is complex?

While the Flesch Reading Ease assessment, which has now moved to the Insights tab, will score your text on roughly the same words, it wasn’t able to highlight complex words for you. With the new feature, you can! But, you might discover that it highlights words that you find are not that difficult to understand at all. Then, you can safely skip our feedback. Remember, no one knows your audience better than you!

Why do I need WordProof in Yoast SEO?

In todays’ online world, where content is stolen, and fake news becomes viral in a split second, you want to show both your visitors as well as search engines that you’re trustworthy. But how? Yoast SEO now has an integration with WordProof which allows you to timestamp your Privacy Policy page and Terms & Condition page if you use WooCommerce SEO.

Timestamping means adding pieces of content to the blockchain to protect your content. Adding a timestamp to a piece of content, you can prove that the content exists, who the writer is, when the content is written, and when it was last edited, if so. With a badge or link, you can show your visitors that the content is protected. Everyone on the web can check what changes have been made in previous versions of the content. This makes the web much more transparent and trustworthy.

How does it work?

When you hear blockchain, you might think of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. But blockchain technology has many more possible applications. ‘Hashing’ is the application we’ll address here to explain the technology used for timestamping your content.

With hashing, you can generate a fixed-length string of characters from your data, like a unique fingerprint. The data input can be a word, a sentence, a longer text, or an entire file. The generated string of characters is the hash and the same message always results in the same hash. Changing the input a tiny bit, the hash will be completely different.

WordProof adds the hash to a blockchain transaction, after which it can’t be altered or removed. This hash, stored in a blockchain, is a timestamp. You can see the timestamp as a certificate of birth for your content. With this unique hash, timestamped on a blockchain, you can prove to people, search engines, and social media platforms that you didn’t tamper with your content.

Why do I need to use the REST API in Yoast SEO?

When you use WordPress as a headless CMS, it may be hard to do SEO properly since there aren’t many readily available SEO tools for such an environment. So, you might end up having to build everything yourself. And that can be some tough work! On top of programming, you’d need to be excellent in SEO too. Well, the Yoast SEO REST API endpoint covers the SEO part for you. We make the SEO metadata of a post or page, such as crawling directives or structured data, available for you to use. In addition, we expose the data and give you more granular control over the metadata you receive from the API endpoint of Yoast.

How does displaying the estimated reading time feature work in Yoast SEO Premium? 

There are two ways to use this feature. If you want to share the estimated reading time with the audience, all it takes is for you to use the Gutenberg block editor in WordPress. That will allow you to add the Estimated reading time block to your post. The Yoast SEO Premium plugin will then automatically calculate and display the time on the page. Alternatively, if you want to calculate the estimated reading time without displaying it, you can use the Insights tab. The plugin will show the estimated reading time automatically whenever you use the Yoast SEO Premium insights.

The Zapier integration with Yoast SEO has been deprecated as of Yoast SEO 20.7. To continue using Yoast SEO and Zapier, you can transition to Webhooks by Zapier. Yoast SEO’s API documentation helps you with the configuration process. Also, on Zapier’s site, you can check which Zaps use Yoast SEO.

Why do I need to change the Schema for a page?

The default settings in Yoast SEO work for almost any page, but there are times when you’d like to be a little more specific about your content. While a search engine can figure out a contact page is a contact page by reading the contents, it helps to set that in stone so there can be no misunderstanding. This is what you can do in the Yoast SEO Schema tab: specify specific content types. Now, you can describe your contact page as being just that: a contact page, or in Schema language a ContactPage!

This is just one of the many, many possibilities the Yoast SEO Schema tab now unlocks for you.

Schema helps search engines make sense of your content

Search engines can read the content on your page to get an idea of what that page is about. But search engines need more context to truly understand your content and to make sure they can trust it. Schema helps you do this because you are describing your content in a way that makes sense to them.

Yoast SEO automatically adds Schema

Schema is so important right now that we add it automatically for you — on every page you make. Not only that, but we also make the connections that help search engines in their search for meaning. For most pages, the default Schema is fine but we also let you change it where needed. In addition, we also have other features that generate Schema, like our content blocks and our other plugins, like Local SEO and WooCommerce SEO. All these describe specific pieces of content and add all that to the main graph of your site.

This makes it clear for Google what type of page it is and what it can expect. Just make sure that the type you pick fits the content.

Change the default content type

Yoast SEO has a set of sensible defaults for many things, including the content types for posts and pages. By default, the plugin defines pages as Web Pages and articles as Articles. Of course, you can use the Schema tab to change these to whatever fits your content best. In addition, you can also change the default settings in Search Appearance > Content Types.

Why do I need the Yoast SEO internal linking blocks?

With internal linking, you help users and search engines find your content. The Yoast SEO Internal linking blocks for the Block editor in WordPress can help you with this. So, we made a bunch of them to make your life easier. Read on to find out precisely what each block can do for you!

Internal linking is like putting up road signs that guide readers and search engines. Without them, your essential content may get lost. But, if you neatly set up your internal links with Yoast SEO Premium and make your content findable, you may turn one-time visitors of your site into returning, long-term explorers.

Let’s say you have an entire site about snacks. One of the pages on the site is about chips and your love for them. That’s the main page on chips, also called the parent page. Then, you use subpages to write about the different chips varieties. For example, you have one page about potato chips, another one about nacho chips, etc.

Now, you want to make sure people and search engines find all these pages. What’s the best thing to do? Add links from the parent page to all the subpages, of course. And how will you do that? You guessed it, with the Yoast SEO Premium Subpages block. Add the block, and the links will appear. It’s like magic.
